Do these in order. The whole sequence takes under a minute, and the aim is simple — put distance between your household and the board, remove power if you safely can, and get a professional there fast.
Step 1: Move Everyone Away From the Switchboard
Your first priority is people, not property. Get children, pets and anyone else out of the immediate area and keep them away. If you can see smoke, get everyone out of the building entirely and stay out.
Do not stand in front of the board investigating the smell. Arc faults inside a switchboard can release intense heat and molten material without warning, and standing close is exactly where you do not want to be if that happens.
Step 2: Do Not Open the Board or Touch Anything Inside It
The urge to open the cover and look is completely natural, and it is the single most dangerous thing you can do. Behind the switch panel are live busbars carrying full supply voltage — and critically, they remain live even after you turn off your main switch, because the supply side comes in ahead of it.

Leave it and get out if: you can see smoke or flame, hear crackling or buzzing, see melted or discoloured plastic, or the panel feels warm. In that situation the board is already failing and reaching across it is not worth the risk.
Step 4: Call 000 for Smoke or Flame — Then a Level 2 Electrician
