Lighting & Power Points — Sydney Electrician
Book or quote your job
Licensed Level 2 ASP · 24/7 across Sydney
Lighting and power points in Sydney covers the supply, installation and replacement of general power outlets (GPOs), light fittings, switches and the wiring that feeds them — all installed to the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules and certified with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW). It ranges from a single extra double socket to fitting out a whole room, kitchen or garage with new circuits.
We’re a licensed NSW electrical contractor handling everything from swapping a tired old GPO for a USB-charging outlet, to running new lighting and power circuits back to your switchboard. Where a job needs additional capacity, we assess the board and circuitry first so the new load is supported safely rather than just bridged off an already-busy circuit.
We work across all Sydney metro suburbs plus the Central Coast, with 24/7 availability for power-point and lighting faults that can’t wait — sparking outlets, dead circuits or scorched fittings. Book online or call 0433 462 902.
What's Involved
A lighting and power points job starts with checking what your switchboard and existing circuits can carry, then installing or replacing fittings and running cable to suit. Every job is tested and certified with a CCEW. Typical inclusions:
- New single, double or quad GPOs, including USB-C outlets and weatherproof outdoor sockets
- Replacing cracked, loose, scorched or non-compliant power points and switches
- New lighting points, batten holders, LED downlights, pendants and exterior lights
- Dedicated circuits for ovens, cooktops, air-conditioners and other high-draw appliances
- Adding or upgrading RCD (safety switch) protection on lighting and power circuits
- Two-way and dimmer switching, sensor and timer-controlled lighting
- Running new sub-circuits from the switchboard and labelling them correctly
- Fault-finding on dead or tripping power and lighting circuits
For larger lighting projects we also run dedicated pages for downlight installation, outdoor power points and ceiling fan installation.
Reasons to Use This Service
- You need an extra double power point so you can stop running extension leads and power boards across the room.
- Your old power points are cracked, loose, discoloured or warm to the touch and need replacing before they become a hazard.
- You're renovating a kitchen, bathroom or laundry and need new GPOs and dedicated circuits for appliances.
- A lighting or power circuit keeps tripping the safety switch, or a room has gone completely dead.
- You want bright, even LED lighting to replace dim or failing fittings in a living area, kitchen or hallway.
- You're setting up a home office, media wall or workshop and need outlets and data points where they're actually useful.
- You need weatherproof outdoor power points for a deck, pergola, pool area or garden.
- An older home or unit has too few outlets, no RCD protection on circuits, or unsafe DIY wiring that needs to be made compliant.
Our Process
- Tell us what you need. Book online or call and describe the work — extra power points, new lighting, a tripping circuit or a full room fit-out. For emergencies like a sparking outlet we prioritise the job.
- On-site assessment and quote. We check your switchboard, existing circuits and available capacity, then give you a clear written quote before any work starts. No surprises once we're on the tools.
- Installation to the Wiring Rules. We install GPOs, fittings and any new sub-circuits to AS/NZS 3000, using fixings and cable runs suited to your wall type and building.
- Test and safety-check. Every new or altered circuit is tested for correct polarity, earthing and RCD operation so the installation is safe and verified before we leave.
- Certify and tidy up. We issue your Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW), label the switchboard, clean the work area and walk you through what was done.
NSW Compliance
All lighting and power point work in NSW must be carried out by a licensed electrical worker and installed to the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules. New and altered circuits must have correct earthing and RCD (safety switch) protection, and every job is documented with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) — the certificate that confirms the work was tested and complies. We provide your copy on completion.
Standard lighting and power point installation sits within general electrical work and does not require network-operator involvement. If your job also needs more capacity at the point of supply — upgrading consumer mains, the service, or metering between the network and your switchboard — that’s separate Level 2 ASP work that we coordinate with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy. We hold the NSW Level 2 ASP accreditation, so both the inside-the-board work and any service-side upgrade can be handled by the one contractor.
Pricing Approach
We price lighting and power point work on a fixed, written quote, not vague hourly guesswork. After we’ve seen the job — or had a clear description for straightforward swaps — you get an upfront price for the labour, fittings and any new cabling, so you know the cost before we start.
What drives the price is the scope: replacing an existing GPO on a live circuit is quick, while adding new outlets or lights usually means running fresh cable and sometimes a new sub-circuit from the switchboard, which takes longer. Wall and ceiling type, access into cavities, the distance back to the board, and whether the switchboard needs an RCD or extra capacity all affect the figure. We’ll flag anything that changes the quote before doing it, and certification is included.
Sydney-Specific Considerations
Sydney’s housing stock makes lighting and power point work very location-specific. Inner-suburb terraces and Federation homes around Newtown, Balmain, Glebe and the Inner West often have lath-and-plaster walls, limited cavity space and ageing, under-supplied circuits with few outlets — so adding power points there is rarely a simple drop-in. Strata units and apartments across the eastern suburbs and lower North Shore add by-laws and common-property wiring to consider, and heritage-listed properties need fittings and cable runs that respect the building fabric. Whether you’re on the Ausgrid network across most of Sydney and the Central Coast, or Endeavour Energy in the west and south-west, we work to the same AS/NZS 3000 standard and issue a CCEW on every job.
How This Service Is Delivered
- Assess the switchboard and existing circuits
We check the switchboard for spare capacity, RCD protection and the condition of the circuit the new outlets or lights will join, so the additional load is supported rather than overloading a busy circuit.
- Plan outlet and fitting positions
We confirm where each GPO, switch and light should go for practical use and clean cable routing, taking wall type, furniture and clearances into account.
- Isolate the supply and work safely
We isolate the relevant circuit at the switchboard and verify it's dead before cutting in, keeping the rest of the home powered wherever possible.
- Run cable and install the fittings
We run new cable through wall and ceiling cavities, mount the GPOs, switches or light fittings, and terminate to AS/NZS 3000, adding a new sub-circuit from the board where the load requires it.
- Test polarity, earthing and RCD operation
Every new or altered circuit is tested for correct polarity, earth continuity and RCD trip operation to confirm the installation is safe and working as intended.
- Certify, label and hand over
We issue the Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW), update the switchboard labelling, clean up and show you how everything operates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you add a power point to an existing wall without major damage?
In most cases, yes. Where there's an accessible wall cavity or ceiling space we can fish new cable through with minimal cutting. Older Sydney homes with lath-and-plaster walls or limited cavity space can be trickier, so we assess access on site and tell you upfront if any patching will be needed before we start.
Why does my power point or lighting circuit keep tripping the safety switch?
A repeatedly tripping circuit usually means a fault — moisture in an outlet, a failing appliance, a damaged cable or an overloaded circuit. It's the RCD doing its job. Don't keep resetting it. We fault-find to locate the cause, then repair or reconfigure the circuit and test it before handing it back.
Do I get a compliance certificate for power point and lighting work?
Yes. All new or altered lighting and power point work in NSW is certified with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW), which confirms the job was tested and complies with the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules. We provide your copy on completion.
Can you replace old power points with USB or weatherproof outlets?
Yes. We swap tired or non-compliant GPOs for modern outlets, including USB-C charging points and IP-rated weatherproof sockets for outdoor and undercover areas. If the existing wiring is in good order it's usually a quick job; if it's aged or undersized we'll let you know what's needed.
I manage a strata building — can you do power point and lighting work in the units and common areas?
Yes. We work across strata units and common property throughout Sydney, and we'll coordinate around building access and any work that touches common-property wiring. Every job is tested and certified with a CCEW for your records.
Do you offer after-hours help for power point or lighting faults?
Yes. We're available 24/7 across Sydney metro and the Central Coast for urgent electrical faults — a sparking or scorched outlet, a dead circuit or burning smell. Switch off at the board if it's safe to do so and call 0433 462 902.
Do you cover my suburb?
We cover all Sydney metro suburbs plus the Central Coast. Most of Sydney and the Central Coast sit on the Ausgrid network, while the western and south-western suburbs are on Endeavour Energy — for standard lighting and power point work this makes no difference to the job, and we install to the same AS/NZS 3000 standard everywhere.
