Properties across Vaucluse, Rose Bay, Bellevue Hill, and Double Bay typically combine large-scale modern installations — multi-zone air conditioning, ducted vacuum, extensive downlighting, pool/spa equipment — with original switchboards rebuilt during the 1990s renovation wave that haven't kept pace with current load.

About Switchboard Upgrade

A switchboard upgrade replaces a fuse-wire or ceramic fuse board with circuit breakers and RCD protection on every final subcircuit, to AS/NZS 3000. If the board is ceramic, your insurer has flagged it, or you are adding solar, an induction cooktop, or an EV charger, call 0433 462 902 or book online.

The visit includes the network disconnection and reconnection. That part is Level 2 ASP work. We are accredited with both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy, electrical contractor licence 236351C, so you do not book a second contractor. If the cables from the street connection to the board are undersized, that is a consumer mains upgrade, and we quote it with the board rather than finding it mid-job. You receive a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) when we finish.

Electrical work in Double Bay

Pre-2000 Federation conversions across Bondi, Coogee, Maroubra, and Bronte frequently still have ceramic-fuse boards mixed with retrofit RCDs, with aging air-conditioning circuits added to original 1960s capacity that routinely overload modern breakers under summer load.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a switchboard upgrade involve?
A switchboard upgrade replaces your old fuse-wire or ceramic fuse board with a modern unit fitted with circuit breakers and RCD (safety switch) protection to meet AS/NZS 3000 standards. Because the work requires a temporary disconnection from the Ausgrid network, it must be carried out by a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP) electrician. On completion, you receive a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) confirming the installation is safe and code-compliant.
How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?
The clearest signs are ceramic or porcelain fuse holders instead of circuit breakers, fuses that blow repeatedly, or no RCD (safety switch) protection on your circuits. Your insurer flagging your board, planning a solar installation, or adding a new circuit are also reliable triggers to get it assessed.
Do I really need to upgrade my switchboard?
If your home still has ceramic fuses or rewirable fuse wire, upgrading is strongly recommended — and in many cases required by your insurer or triggered by adding solar panels, an EV charger, or a new circuit. Older boards lack the RCD protection mandated by current Australian standards, leaving your household exposed to electric shock and fire risk.
Is upgrading my switchboard worth it?
Yes — a modern switchboard with RCD protection significantly reduces the risk of electric shock and electrical fire, and it is typically a prerequisite for solar installations, EV chargers, and any major circuit additions. It also resolves the insurer flags that commonly accompany outdated fuse boards.
Can I do a switchboard upgrade myself?
No — switchboard upgrades are licensed electrical work under NSW law and cannot legally be performed by an unlicensed person. Because the job also requires disconnecting your property from the Ausgrid network, it specifically requires a Level 2 ASP electrician, not just a general licensed electrician.
