Licensed Level 2 ASP · 24/7 across Sydney

Level 2 electrician beside an Ausgrid street distribution kiosk
Network-side consumer-mains work at an Ausgrid street kiosk — the kind of job only a Level 2 ASP can legally do.

A consumer mains upgrade replaces the cabling that runs from your property’s point of attachment (POA) to your main switchboard with correctly sized conductors that meet current capacity and safety requirements. Because this work sits on the network connection side of your installation, it must be carried out by a licensed NSW Level 2 ASP (Accredited Service Provider) and coordinated with your network operator. At Sydney Electrical Service, our Level 2 electricians size, replace and certify consumer mains across all Sydney metro suburbs and the Central Coast.

Older homes are often still running undersized single-phase mains that were never designed for ducted air conditioning, induction cooking, EV chargers and modern loads. When those cables are too small, deteriorated or showing heat damage, you get nuisance tripping, voltage drop and a genuine fire risk at the connection.

We handle the full job end to end — assessment, network coordination, the physical mains replacement, switchboard interface, live disconnection and reconnection, and the Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW). Need it sorted urgently? We’re available 24/7 — call 0433 462 902 or book online.

What's Involved

A consumer mains upgrade is the replacement of the consumer mains conductors between the point of attachment and your main switchboard, sized to current demand and to the Service & Installation Rules of NSW. As Level 2 ASP work, it also covers the connection-side coordination most general electricians can’t legally perform.

A typical upgrade includes:

  • On-site assessment and maximum-demand calculation to size the new mains correctly
  • Coordination with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy for the service work and any required disconnection
  • Supply and installation of new consumer mains (overhead or underground, single- or three-phase)
  • Live disconnection at the POA and reconnection once the new mains are in
  • Termination into the main switchboard, with main switch and tails checked or upgraded as needed
  • Rectification of any related defects on the consumer side of the point of attachment
  • Testing, energising, and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW)

Where the existing switchboard or metering can’t safely accept the upgraded supply, we’ll flag that upfront so it’s quoted in, not sprung on you mid-job.

Reasons to Use This Service

  • Your switchboard's main switch or fuses keep tripping when multiple appliances run at once, pointing to undersized or overloaded consumer mains.
  • You're adding heavy loads — ducted air conditioning, an EV charger, induction cooktop, pool equipment or a granny flat — and the existing mains can't carry the demand.
  • You're upgrading from single-phase to three-phase supply and the consumer mains have to be replaced to suit.
  • Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy has issued a defect notice on your consumer mains, with disconnection a risk if it isn't rectified.
  • The cabling between the point of attachment and switchboard is old VIR or TPS, brittle, or showing signs of heat damage at the terminations.
  • You're noticing dimming lights or voltage drop across the house when large appliances start up.
  • A pre-purchase or strata inspection has flagged the mains as undersized or non-compliant with the current Service & Installation Rules.
  • You're renovating or building, and the supply capacity needs lifting to match the new electrical design.

Our Process

  1. Assessment and quote. We attend site, inspect the point of attachment, existing mains and switchboard, and calculate your maximum demand. You receive a clear written quote covering the mains size, the method (overhead or underground), and any switchboard or metering work needed.
  2. Network coordination. As your Level 2 ASP, we lodge and coordinate the service and disconnection work with your network operator — Ausgrid across most of Sydney and the Central Coast, or Endeavour Energy in western and south-western Sydney — so the job is approved and scheduled correctly.
  3. Disconnection. On the day, we arrange the live disconnection at the point of attachment so the old consumer mains can be removed safely and the supply isolated for the works.
  4. Install the new mains. We run and terminate the new, correctly sized consumer mains from the POA to the main switchboard, addressing the main switch, tails and any consumer-side defects along the way.
  5. Reconnect and test. We reconnect at the point of attachment, energise the installation, and carry out the required testing to confirm everything is safe and compliant.
  6. Certify and hand over. We issue your Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) and finalise the network paperwork, so you have documented proof the upgrade meets NSW requirements.

NSW Compliance

Consumer mains work is Level 2 ASP territory: it involves the connection between the network and your installation, so it can only be performed by an Accredited Service Provider authorised by the network operator. The new mains must be sized and installed in accordance with AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules) and the Service & Installation Rules of NSW, and the service and disconnection work must be coordinated with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy depending on your area.

On completion, a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) is issued to certify the work, and the relevant notification is submitted to the network operator. Where the distributor has issued a defect notice on your consumer mains, that rectification is required to keep your supply — if it isn’t addressed within the notice period, the network can disconnect the property, which is exactly why this work needs a licensed Level 2 ASP rather than a general electrician.

Pricing Approach

Every consumer mains upgrade is quoted upfront in writing after we’ve assessed the site — we don’t price this kind of work blind over the phone. The cost is driven by real variables: the length and run of the mains, single- or three-phase, overhead versus underground, the cable size your demand requires, whether the main switchboard or main switch needs upgrading to accept the new supply, and the network operator’s own service and metering charges.

Once we’ve inspected your point of attachment, switchboard and demand, you get a clear fixed-price quote with the scope itemised, so you know what’s included before any work starts. Genuine emergency call-outs for unsafe or disconnected mains are available 24/7 — call 0433 462 902 to talk through your situation.

Sydney-Specific Considerations

Sydney’s older housing stock is the main reason consumer mains upgrades come up so often — terraces and semis through the inner west, eastern suburbs and lower north shore frequently still run decades-old single-phase mains never sized for today’s loads, and many sit on Ausgrid’s network, while western and south-western suburbs fall under Endeavour Energy, each with their own coordination process. Strata and heritage properties add a layer too: in apartment blocks the consumer mains and metering arrangements need careful handling, and heritage-listed homes often require underground or discreet overhead runs to preserve the streetscape. We work across all of this every day, right out to Central Coast dispatch.

How This Service Is Delivered

  1. Assess the point of attachment and switchboard

We inspect the existing point of attachment, the consumer mains run, the main switchboard and metering, and check for heat damage, brittle insulation or undersized conductors.

  2. Calculate maximum demand and size the mains

Using your current and planned loads, we calculate maximum demand and select the correct cable size and configuration — single- or three-phase — to AS/NZS 3000 and the Service & Installation Rules of NSW.

  3. Coordinate with the network operator

As your Level 2 ASP, we arrange the service work and disconnection with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy so the upgrade is approved and scheduled correctly for your area.

  4. Disconnect and remove the old mains

We isolate and disconnect the supply at the point of attachment, then safely remove the old consumer mains.

  5. Install and terminate the new consumer mains

We run the new, correctly sized mains from the POA to the main switchboard and terminate at both ends, upgrading the main switch and tails where required.

  6. Reconnect, energise and test

We reconnect at the point of attachment, energise the installation and perform the required testing to confirm the upgrade is safe and compliant.

  7. Certify with a CCEW

We issue your Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) and submit the required network notification, completing the upgrade with full documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are consumer mains and how are they different from the service mains?

Consumer mains are the cables that run from your property's point of attachment (POA) to your main switchboard — they're on your side of the connection. The service mains are the network's cables running from the grid to the point of attachment. Both involve the network connection, so both require a licensed Level 2 ASP to work on them.

Do I really need a Level 2 electrician for a consumer mains upgrade?

Yes. Consumer mains work sits on the connection side of your installation and involves disconnection and reconnection at the point of attachment, which only a licensed NSW Level 2 ASP is authorised to do. A general (Level 1) electrician can't legally perform or certify this work.

How do I know my consumer mains need upgrading?

Common signs include the main switch tripping under load, lights dimming when large appliances start, old brittle or heat-damaged cabling at the terminations, or a defect notice from your network operator. Adding heavy loads like ducted air conditioning, an EV charger or three-phase supply is another common trigger. We assess and confirm on site.

I've received a defect notice from Ausgrid — what happens now?

A defect notice means the network has identified a problem on your consumer mains that must be rectified within a set period, or they can disconnect your supply. As a Level 2 ASP, we can attend, rectify the defect, coordinate with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy, and issue the CCEW to clear the notice. Call us as soon as you receive one so we can act inside the timeframe.

Will my power be off during the upgrade?

Yes, your supply is disconnected at the point of attachment while the old mains are removed and the new ones installed, then reconnected once we've terminated and tested. We plan the disconnection window with you and the network operator to keep the outage as short as practical.

Can you upgrade me from single-phase to three-phase at the same time?

Often, yes. If your demand or new equipment calls for three-phase, the consumer mains are replaced to suit and we coordinate the change with your network operator. We'll confirm what your switchboard and the network can support and quote it as part of the upgrade.

Do you handle the paperwork with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy?

Yes. As your Level 2 ASP we coordinate the service and disconnection work with the relevant network operator — Ausgrid across most of Sydney and the Central Coast, or Endeavour Energy in western and south-western Sydney — and issue the Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) on completion.

How much does a consumer mains upgrade cost in Sydney?

It depends on the length and method of the run, single- or three-phase, the cable size your demand requires, any switchboard work, and the network operator's charges. We assess your site and give you a clear written fixed-price quote upfront before any work starts — book an assessment or call 0433 462 902.
